What is it? Is it the same as passion? Is it good or bad? Is it Godly? Can I control it?
As always we look at all topics from a Biblical perspective. I believe you will find that whether you understand the Bible or not you will find this message to be true to the core of your being.
Webster’s defines it as, “To long or hope for” or “To feel the loss of”.
The Bible shows us desire in two distinct ways first….
As with any concept with God there are “two sides to the coin” respectively. God is all loving and holy. He does not push us to Himself yet he sets forth a perfect path to His presence and security.
Let’s go back to the Garden of Eden.
After they ate of the fruit one part of the curse was, “Yet your desire will be for your husband and he will rule over you.” GEN 3:16 (nasb). We’ll call this the negative side.
Now we look at 1COR 12:31. “But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.”
Notice the verse has a period and the next sentence begins with “and”. Not too correct in English but absolute in the Greek. We are told to “Earnestly DESIRE the higher gifts. This is not through works but faith in what God has to show us. As the second part of the verse states “I WILL show you” is absolute, resolute and perfect.
What’s the difference…One is a desire for earthly things (in Eve’s curse, Man) the other is for Godly permanent things. Anytime we put something above or ahead of God, we are desirous for the wrong things.
So now we've looked at both sides of the coin, the good and the consequence or negative. God has actually set everything out for us to be for our own good. He simply shows us what could happen without his presence and his help.
The key to understanding
this subject is to make sure that we know the difference between desire (when it reaches the heart and replaces God) versus enjoying those things God has already given us. After all, he says he WILL give us the desire of our hearts. That could be a person, a place or thing but again, we don’t want to set it above (God) or put it too high up on our priority list.
There is a great deal of desire in same-sex attraction. We want what we see in someone else to the point where we would do almost anything to get it. We, by having sex with that person, feel as if we’re taking that part of them and bringing it into ourselves and somehow trying to equate with it as if it was going to stay within us and become part of us.
The truth about this type of desire is that we cannot become “that” of the person. We cannot gain their attributes by having physical relations with them. In fact, we can’t gain their attributes by having anything to do with them in the natural world as they are attributes of that person and not of ourselves. If they (the attributes) are to be part of ourselves then they need to be properly and lovingly developed in a healthy way.
As we live lives feeling inadequate or as if something’s missing or wrong, we continue to seek to find those things in someone else. Of course you can never “pick up” those things as we stated earlier, from someone else.
This is the brokenness that is in all who struggle with same-sex attraction and using SSA to fill the needs of their heart and lives. Those who have not acted out in same-sex attraction have the opportunity to discover why they might be attracted and allow God to show them what is missing or broken…if anything at all. Simply being able to look at another person of the same sex and seeing their God-given attractiveness does not mean that there is brokenness or that there’s anything wrong with you.
It may simply mean that you like what you see and that’s that. Unfortunately, (because the church does not understand those simple concepts) guilt and shame are brought into simply having a thought and that’s not fair to you or your life! This is especially true if you continue to believe that something’s wrong just because you had a thought.
In conclusion let me say, that if we do what God says and let the desire of our heart be him, putting our eyes on things above (ourselves and this world) then he will take care of everything!
Again, God knows what we need and how to bring it to us. He understands that we struggle. He understands that we have feelings and emotions that are beyond our comprehension. He however, does not have a problem with comprehending every little thing about you. His thoughts are higher and greater and his love can do all things.
Trust in God! Talk to others and to us. Stay encouraged and do not give in to what’s emotionally convenient today. You will lose in the end. Remember…We are here for you!
Call, text or write to us with your thoughts and prayer needs. We are in this together and by God we are okay!
